Biofuels for transport

Biofuels as a renewable source of energy are of particular interest to the economy since they can replace fossil fuels for transportation. Fossil fuels represent a significant source of greenhouse gases and they accounted for more than 30% in total energy consumption with a constant tendency to increase. To meet international obligations in achieving the objectives of sustainable development in the field of transport and alignment of national regulations on energy and environmental protection with the acquis communautaire, one of the tasks of national legislation is to regulate production and use of biofuels in transport.

In the past ten years the European Commission has adopted the documents and the regulations governing the sustainable system of measures for encouraging the achievement Member States' common goals. Directive 2009/28/EZ of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC defines the objectives and obligations of Member States in promotion and use of renewable energy sources in final consumption of electricity, heating and cooling, and fuel for transport. The Directive sets a mandatory 10 % minimum target to be achieved by all Member States for the share of biofuels in transport petrol and diesel consumption by 2020.
